Calling All Mainers: The Maine Fiber Frolic is June 1 & 2

mainefiberfroliclogoThis year marks the 13th year of the Maine Fiber Frolic. On the agenda are a fleece show and sale, a hand spun skein competition, a sheep to shawl competition, workshops, a used equipment sale and a good sized marketplace of 85 fiber related vendors. Please note that the deadline for workshop registration has passed.

Here’s a little info on each of the competitions. In the handspun competition, there will be 4 divisions under Wool and Other Animal Fibers:

Division 1: Fine – 2 oz. skein, spun fine (sport weight or finer)
Division 2: Medium – 3 oz. skein spun medium (worsted weight)
Division 3: Bulky – 4 oz. skein spun bulky
Division 4: Novelty – 2 oz. skein may be any fiber blend with 50% wool

Other natural fiber divisions include:

Division 5: Fine – 2 oz. skein, spun fine (sport weight or finer)
Division 6: Medium – 3 oz. skein spun medium (worsted weight)

In the Sheep to Shawl Competition, teams of six members will compete to create a shawl of 1440 square inches: there will be one weaver, 4 spinners and a go-fer on each team. The first team to complete a shawl to specifications wins.

Fleeces entered in the Fleece Show will be judged in the following categories:

Sheep:
White fine, medium, coarse, and long wool
Colored fine, medium, coarse, and long wool
Rug wool

Alpaca:
White, colored and cria (under one year at time of harvest)

Llama:
White, colored and cria (under one year at time of harvest)

Bunny

Goat:
cashmere, Kid mohair, adult mohair

All fleeces in the Fleece Show (as well as other fleeces) will be up for sale after the competition.

The Maine Fiber Frolic is June 1 & 2, 2013, 9 – 4 pm at the Windsor Fairgrounds, Rt. 32, Windsor, Maine. Admission is $5/adult, $2/senior adult, and children under 12 are free.
